Lula Music and Arts Centre Field Trips - Grades 4 - 12

Lula Music and Arts presents Lula Lab
As part of its mandate to support global music and culture through arts presentations, artist development and education, Lula Music and Arts Centre offers enriching and challenging workshops and performances for Ontario elementary, intermediate and secondary school students. Most events take place at Lula Lounge located near Dundas and Dufferin. The classes are ideal as field trips for music, Spanish, dance, physical education and French language classes. A minimum of 40 students are required to run a class but we are happy to try to match up smaller groups.

Joanna Moon’s
French World Café

Quebecois singer /songwriter / guitarist Joanna Moon is joined by bassist and music educator Kevin Braun in this lively performance. French World Cafe highlights the warmth of French musical culture as it has flourished around the world — exploring songs from France, Quebec and Africa. Students will learn how to play spoons as well as the lyrics to a French African song. More info about the artist at joanna-moon.com The performance is followed by an optional French meal served in French with the help of your students roleplaying as French waiters. The afternoon provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of French culture and practice their comprehension skills while gaining a better understanding of the phrase “joie de vivre.”  Support study materials available in advance upon request. (Minimum number of students: 40) $29. Teachers free.

Lula Afrique (FRENCH)
With the option to focus on African dance or percussion, the Lula Afrique program provides French language and music students the opportunity to explore musical culture from French-speaking African countries while strengthening their French listening and speaking skills. Instructors will discuss the role that music and art play in African societies. An African inspired meal provides the opportunity to discuss and compare differences in dining etiquette in different cultures. Instructors include Amadou Kienou (from Birkina Faso) and Jean Assamoa (from Cote d’Ivoire) (Minimum number of students: 40) $25 to $29 per student. Teachers free.



SPANISH OUTINGS
Lula Music and Arts Centre presents a series of exciting and challenging workshops and performances for intermediate and secondary school students which explore the cultural diversity of Latin America and the Caribbean. The classes are ideal as field trips for Spanish language, music and dance classes with an optional Latin American meal.




Mexican Fandango (SPANISH)
This interactive musical performance is led by Café Con Pan, the energetic and entertaining son jarocho folk ensemble from Veracruz. Students will learn zapateado dance steps, sing in Spanish and play percussion. This group performed together in Mexico for ten years before moving to Canada in 2009. They explain the history and cultural significance of this community based, music which has European, African and Indigenous roots. (Minimum number of students: 40) $29. Teachers free.

Salsa Dancing
 (SPANISH)
Lead by Venezuelan-born Miko Sobreira, this class draws on South American street dance to encourage students to trust themselves and others – emphasizing the importance of clear communication and mutual support in learning and artistic environments. A great way to break the ice and build cooperation with new groups of students – while enjoying some of the best salsa music ever! Conducted in Spanish or English. (Minimum number of students: 40)  $25 includes lunch, tax and tip. $12 class only. Teachers free.

Cuban Percussion (SPANISH)
This class, led by Toronto’s foremost Latin American percussionists, introduces students to an array of Cuban rhythms. Participants will play traditional instruments while learning about Cuban culture and history. Our featured teacher Luis Orbegoso (known in the latin recording industry as “Luisito”) was born in Lima, Perú in 1971 and moved to Canada in 1972. He became an honoured graduate of the Humber College music program in 1994 and has been a member of the Toronto Musicians Association since 1993. (Minimum number of students: 40)  $25 includes lunch, tax and tip. $12 class only. Teachers free.
